8 Misconceptions About Shingle Repair

We have heard a lot of opinions about shingle repair and replacement throughout our time servicing the Savannah area.  What we’ve learned is that many homeowners simply do not know the truth about the roof that covers their home.  For your convenience, here are 8 of the more common misconceptions we’ve encountered concerning shingle repair:

8 Misconceptions about Shingle Repair:

    1. If there are no missing shingles, your roof is good to go!
This is not true; damage caused by hail may not appear until some years down the line – a yearly roof inspection is always recommended to catch small problems before they become big problems.

    1. When the shingles are new they are covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.
This is only true if they are properly installed – many roofers have unknowingly voided warranties by improper installation.

    1. Shingle roofs have a warranty that lasts a lifetime and you will have to do nothing to repair it.
A lifetime warranty has a fixed length – covering the expected lifetime of the shingles.  This could be anywhere from 25 – 50 years, depending on the manufacturer and product.

    1. Your shingles roof warranty will cover all expenses incurred in a roof repair or replacement project.
Check the fine print – many warranties cover only the cost of the materials – they exclude labor costs.

    1. A shingle maintenance program is a waste of money.
Carefully calculate the ROI (return on investment) with a maintenance program that discovers a minor problem in your roofing system that costs a minor amount to fix but prevents a costly amount of damage.

    1. It more cost effective to have the shingles repaired than replaced.
This is often true at face value – but a long-term investment should be considered, as well as the current age of your roof.

    1. Roof replacement is a simple process.
(see #2) Unless you are a professional, we discourage homeowners from attempting to replace the roof of their home – slopes, caps and ridges can pose a problem, and specific installation specs must be carefully followed.

  1. It does not matter which roofer in the Savannah area you call to fix your problem.
Of course it matters!  Look for a local roofing contractor known for quality service and a great reputation.
