7 Tips to get your Lawn and Garden Ready for Winter

Winter will soon be here in Savannah so it?s time to start preparing your lawn, garden, and shingle roofing for the cold. Here are a few tips to help you with the preparation:

Repair Summer?s Damage

Now is the time to repair a damaged lawn and reseed it. A great idea would be to put down perennial rye grass, as it germinates quickly compared to other varieties. Top dressing the grass with composted manure will help spur its growth.

Careful Pruning and Mulching

Avoid heavy pruning of shrubs and trees going into winter. However, you still need to check for broken branches and cut them away. As winter comes in and temperatures fall, touch up mulch at the base of perennial plants and shrubs to help retain moisture.

Bring Plants Indoors

Savannah occasionally experiences extreme cold which could damage some plants which are more sensitive to cold than others, such as tropical varieties or those in containers. Any plants not already in pots can be potted and placed in a shed, the garage, or even an indoor room, if they are especially sensitive and wouldn’t overwinter well.

Store Bulbs

Now is the time to dig all flowering bulbs which are not reliably winter hardy, such as dahlias . Fall is also the time to plant spring-flowering bulbs, such as tulips and daffodils. The bulbs are planted with roots facing downwards and then mulched for protection during the winter.

Composting and Preparing the Soil

Remove spent plants from the garden beds and add them to the compost bin. Discard diseased plants into the trash as you don’t want them infecting your compost. It is also time to turn over the soil to ready it for next planting season. Turning it over will also help to expose any pests hiding beneath the ground to the cold.

Winterize Your Compost Bin

The simplest way to do this is to cover the bin with a tarp to allow composting to continue in the winter. Add leaves for insulation, and remember, if possible during the winter, to water it occasionally to keep the compost moist.

Prepare Your Shingle Roofing

To maintain an attractive home in the winter season, check to see that your shingle roofing is also in good shape. In Savannah, the summer storms can be brutal with branches breaking and leaves and twigs falling everywhere, so remember to also clean off your shingle roofing before winter, being sure to check for any damage it may have sustained, too.

Fall is a beautiful time of year with many nice days to spend in the yard and garden. It’s a great time to do all the things that need to be done before winter so your home is safe and ready for the next season.
