Why Asphalt Shingles are Still a Great Option for Your Home

There are many different options for  roofing  materials – from metal to tile to concrete to slate.  The variety can make it difficult for many homeowners to decide on the “perfect” roof for their residence.  Fortunately, the great American classic, asphalt shingle roofing, is still one of the most popular choices for homes in need of a great roofing system. At Tri County Roofing and Siding we love working with asphalt shingles – for many reasons. There are certainly other roofing options with more longevity and flair like clay tiles or cedar shakes, but those may be an unnecessary expense in both categories, while asphalt shingles offer some very real benefits.

Benefits of Asphalt Shingles

  • Affordability does not necessarily mean terrible quality. In the case of asphalt shingles, it is definitely something to consider. A 2009 study by the National Association of Home Builders estimates that roof shingles account for 3.8 percent of the construction costs of a home. The value and protection that a homeowner receives from devoting this amount to a good shingle roof can make it a worthwhile investment.
  • Water-Tightness is one of the best advantages of shingle roofing made from composite asphalt. There are several ways by which asphalt shingles are constructed, sometimes utilizing fiberglass or organic threads, but both are designed to shed water easily.
  • Installation of asphalt requires much less time and labor than many of the alternatives, which make them a popular recurring option. Storm repairs can be easily accomplished.
  • Aesthetically, asphalt shingles have a lot to offer. They can be produced in any color, and varying geometric styles that all amount to a sleek minimalist look that works well with many architectural styles.
  • Eco-friendly – nowadays, most asphalt shingle manufacturers produce roofing materials that can be recycled.  Your old shingle roof will be able to be reused, saving a percentage of resources and energy in the process.
  • Cool Roofing options – Many asphalt shingles are produced with special, reflective granules that help to keep the roof of your home cooler during hot, sunny days.  In turn, this extends the lifespan of your roof and decreases energy loss in your home.

The average protective lifespan of asphalt shingles varies slightly due to composite styles and climate conditions, but usually averages around 15-30 years.
